May be you need to get the errors:

} catch (SQLException e ) {
String themessage;
themessage = "Error:"+e.getErrorCode()+
" "+e.getMessage();
e=e.getNextException();
if( e != null ) {
themessage = themessage + " " +
e.getErrorCode()+ " " + e.getMessage();
}
System.out.println(themessage);
.............
dependant on what the errors are one can may be decide what to do??
set lock mode to wait or
onstat -uk or have a look at sysmaster:syslocks
maybe you have to checkout the greatest undoced env var ever:
IFX_DIRTY_WAIT
you most likely have to set it in the env of the engine; it may be in
the jdbc stuff
too however the chance is smaller...
