Re: Linking raw disk space to a /dev file in SCO

You didn't specified what SCO operating system are you using. In short: on SCO OpenServer your rturbo could be a division created with divvy (just check with divvy what divisions you have on your disks and I think you'll find somewhere a division named 'turbo'). On SCO OpenServer you can use for raw devices: 1. Disk partitions (use fdisk to create them), and the disk partitions device names are described in 'man HW hd' as I remember. In short their names are: /dev/rhd01 - /dev/rhd04 for partitions 1 to 4 on first disk /dev/rhd11 - /dev/rhd14 for partitions 1 to 4 on second disk and so on 2. Create on a partition a number of divisions using divvy with the partition device name as a parameter. There you can create divisions - create them as filesystems, Informix will overwrite the filesystem structure, and on subsecuent divvy's it will see the divisions as 'NO FILESYSTEM' type. The name you will give to these divisions will reflect in the device names. So, if you will name a division as "chunk1" you'll get two devices created - /dev/chunk1 (block device) and /dev/rchunk1 (character device). This method is the only one if you want to use disks > 8G solely for Informix raw devices. On UnixWare 7 you have too methods too: 1 - use fdisk as in SCO OpenServer - of course the device names will differ. They are now '/dev/rdsk/cXbYtZdWp[1-4]' where X is the controller number, Y is the bus (channel) number, Z is the SCSI ID, W - logical unit number and the digit after p specifies the partition number (0 can be used to reffer the whole disk). The second method is to make slices on partitions using edvtoc (in this case the device name will be /dev/rdsk/cXbYtZdWsS, where S is the slice number) or to create volumes using the volume manager included in UnixWare 7 (the device names in this case depends on the volume group name used, but they will be created in a subdirectory of /dev/vx/rdsk).
