What's wrong with this program?

As the subject says.... {upstats.4gl} main database dirdb update statistics high for table database snsdb update statistics high for table database seamdb update statistics high for table database limdb update statistics high for table database findb update statistics high for table database astdb update statistics high for table end main According to Informix Guide to SQL, Syntax 7.1 pg 1-505 paragraph 4: "If you use UPDATE STATISTICS ... FOR TABLE without a table name, the statistics for all tables, including temporary tables, in the current database are updated." (any typos are mine.) From this, and the flow diagram on pg 1-503, I read that the above statements are completely legit, however, the compiler refuses to compile this program :( Is this not allowed in 4gl? MUST it be esqlc? Help! When I had simply: database dirdb update statistics high then the program would compile, but it looks like it has been doing NOTHING when running, as dbschema shows no new histographic information.
