For Informix Online 4.0 and 4.1. Do not know if this applies to Online 5.0. The three major conditions which could cause the problem with writing to blob pages are: 1) When Informix tbstat -s is running (Informix Archiving), when it locks the table where the blob fields are. Even if you specify that blob data itself is to be stored in separate blobspace, it still can happen. 2) If you create new blobspace recently, and have not run tbstat -a yet (to flush the logical log out). 3) Running 'SET INDEX nnn TO CLUSTER' repeatedly on the index of the table with blob fields without flushing the logical logs. For our application, we have two narrative text blob fields which are edited by using external editor we developed in house. In response to the reported problems of losing the editing sessions when the blob fields were locked, or not available, we added an loop around the 4GL statement to re-try updating the blob fields until it succeeds. Basically the loop looks like: WHILE TRUE FOR i_ = 1 TO 10 WHENEVER ERROR CONTINUE UPDATE table_ VALUES (tableRec_) LET status_ = STATUS WHENEVER ERROR CALL ErrorRtn_ IF status_ = 0 THEN EXIT FOR END IF SLEEP 1 END FOR # prompt user if he/she want to continue trying for # another 10 seconds, or abort, and lose all changes. IF NOT prompt_() THEN EXIT WHILE END IF END WHILE I know I have not really answered your real question, and I do not feel like going into the details right now to explain what happens when blob fields are being updated. If you want to learn more, try to get Informix Online Adminstrator's Guide for Online 5.0. It is excellent, and packed with lot of information and can answer your questions. > regards, > ron -- Paul T.
