Internet says: "SQL Database Companies will go out of business!!"
Posted in 2000
Not a technical support thread: it's a cross-posted troll claiming broadband Internet and PostgreSQL would soon wipe out Oracle, Sybase, Informix and MS SQL Server, citing supposed benchmark wins and 'hundreds of millions' of daily downloads. Replies mostly mock the arithmetic (2 billion installs implies a copy for every third person), question the ODBC-based benchmarks, note PostgreSQL's missing enterprise features, and complain about multi-group spamming. One poster does report successfully choosing PostgreSQL on cost grounds. No technical problem and no resolution.

Al Dev... On Sat, 16 Dec 2000 17:16:22 GMT, Al Dev <alavoor-nospam@yahoo.com> another idiot residing in cloud cuckoo land decided to write some nonsense: >The reason being - high speed, broadband Internet is booming in >US/Europe and >every business and home in US is having access to high speed internet. >Oracle, Sybase will face a serious threat from Internet's SQL server >(PostgreSQL). >Internet is a major threat to SQL database companies!! PostgreSQL only ever beats other SQL server platforms when tested on crappy servers and using ODBC connections, and they say the tests are like for like. Everyone knows some RDBMs perform well with ODBC. But use each platform's native call interfaces on large server farms and watch PostgreSQL get thrashed every time. But hey, these type of postings bring a bit of humour to us anyway. What next Al Dev? ZX81 faster than P4 1.3GHz (when running Manic Miner at 400 degrees C)?
Internet says: "SQL Database Companies will go out of business!! Bad days and bumpy road ahead for database companies....." SQL database companies (big animals/dinosaurs) like oracle, sybase, informix, MS SQl Server will become extinct pretty soon and may vanish from surface of the planet. The reason being - high speed, broadband Internet is booming in US/Europe and every business and home in US is having access to high speed internet. Oracle, Sybase will face a serious threat from Internet's SQL server (PostgreSQL). Internet is a major threat to SQL database companies!! Oracle is like a big steam engine (very old technology), whereas PostgreSQL is like a International Jumbo jet liner connecting Europe and USA. PostgreSQL is much more advanced than oracle and there are many advanced features in PostgreSQL which are NOT available in oracle. On the other hand PostgreSQL implements almost all of the features of Oracle/MS SQL server/Sybase. Oracle is written in 100% "C" language and so is PostgreSQL. It is a danger, DANGER and DANGERous situation for the Oracle,Sybase,Informix! Database companies won't make even a dollar selling SQL server (it is not a good business any more). Already everybody is simply downloading hundreds of millions of copies of PostgreSQL everyday. By next year there will be about 2 billion installations of PostgreSQL world-wide!! European and American population is banging away on Internet SQL server (PostgreSQL). It took about 20 years and millions of developers in USA and Europe to develop postgresql!! Many companies are selling technical support to large enterprises like - PostgreSQL Inc is selling technical support and documentation. Great Bridge at http://www.greatbridge.com is now selling support for PostgreSQL for large enterprises/companies in US/Canada/Europe. Pgsql had already outperformed oracle, MS SQL server in benchmarks. Given a world population of 6 billion: "Hundreds of millions per day" - let's be cautious and call that 200,000,000 per day. That's just 30 days to get a copy to everybody on the planet. PostgreSQL is more like SQL Server than it is different. In fact, if you are proficient in any one RDBMS you can swing to another with ease. What we have is the ability to understand the concepts, and that is not something that plain language query or easy installation and management are going to make obsolete ever. The company I just started at is a local government entity and is not willing to part with the money involved in SQL Server, so I said fine, let's use PostgreSQL. They know that they are limiting the number of plug and play replacements for me, but like I said, any smart programmer or DBA can learn PG in a month. steveee_ca@my-deja.com wrote: > Ah Jonathan, don't you just love statistics? > > In 1968 there were 3286 Elvis impersonators in the US..in 1978 there > were approximately 18000..at that rate of growth every American should > be an Elvis impersonator by next year :) > > S > > I doubt we have to worry about our jobs > > In article <976987743.9150.0.nnrp-07.9e984b29@news.demon.co.uk>, > "Jonathan Lewis" <jonathan@jlcomp.demon.co.uk> wrote: > > > > Given a world population of 6 billion: > > > > "Hundreds of millions per day" - let's be cautious and > > call that 200,000,000 per day. You know, it would not surprise me if quite a number of my colleagues didn't use the following full USENET headers along with a copy of alavoor's spam to complain to yahoo, which he indicates as a return address, earthlink, his news service, and every one of the sites where he's posted information listed in this spam. And, they'd very probably be justified in doing that, because he's done this before, and, at least in comp.databases.ms-access been politely admonished. Thus, he is not only a repeat offender, but one who ignored the documented prohibition of advertising. Some members of some of these newsgroups, I'd wager, would think it only fitting if there were enough complaints to cause him to lose one, some, or all of the many (most/all) free accounts he's using. >From: Al Dev <alavoor-nospam@yahoo.com> >Subject: Internet says: "SQL Database Companies will go out of business!!" >Date: 16 Dec 2000 00:00:00 GMT >Message-ID: <3A3BA38B.94453E46@yahoo.com> >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >X-Accept-Language: en >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-2 >X-Complaints-To: abuse@earthlink.net >X-Trace: newsread1.prod.itd.earthlink.net 976986982 24.221.230.253 (Sat, 16 Dec 2000 09:16:22 PST) >Organization: EarthLink Inc. -- http://www.EarthLink.net >MIME-Version: 1.0 >NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 09:16:22 PST >Newsgroups: comp.databases.ibm- db2,comp.databases.informix,comp.databases.ms-access,comp.databases.ms- sqlserver,comp.databases.oracle.marketplace,comp.databases.oracle.misc,c omp.databases.oracle.server,comp.databases.oracle.tools,comp.databases.s ybase,comp.databases.adabas -- L. I wonder if anybody has realized that PostgreSQL was a flagship Database for the Linux platform. How can its performance really be compared to commercial databases like Oracle, Sybase, and SQL Server. As well put together as the Linux system is, it still can not hold the performance a company like 'Amazon.com' requires. Either for its web front end or database backend. Both oranges and apples might be the same size, and are both sweet, but that's as far as the comparison could go. So come on get real.
