Re: Best database for web backend on Linux?

Sorry. I'd like to say a couple of words about Informix IDS 7.3. Last two weeks we had a lot of problems with this version (IDS 7.3 UC2 Workgoup Edition on SCO OS 5.0.0). One of our customers have upgraded their IDS 7.2 to 7.3. Although we have played a little with IDS 7.3 (not workgroup edition) we didn't discovered all bugs. So, in a production environment the problems were discovered very fast. I could list some of problems that give us the most headache: 1. In stored procedures (may be not only in stored procedures, but we have found this problem in stored procedures) a statement like UPDATE temp_table SET fld = avalue Where otherFld IN (SELECT afield FROM another_temp_table WHERE .. some condition) crushes the server (we didn't found this on IDS 7.3, Base Edition). We have found an workaround (I hope so) - setting the NO_SUBQF variable. It works for now. 2. The indexes on temporary tables doesn't get updated while the underlaying temporary table columns are modified. Of course we can do the following: - Don't using indexes on such temporary tables. - Drop and recreate indexes after modification (or drop before modification and create them after). But it is more than 1000 stored procedures and a lot of 4GL code. To play with this and to test all of this is a hard work, and we are a small company to make this fast enough (we have some projects to work on besides modifing programs with workarounds for this bugs). 3. Some selects on small temporary table (2,3 tables with about 1000 rows each) with indexes are working so slow, and at this time they make such a load on Database Server and Operating System that no more people can run anything. The problem was solved using AVOID_INDEX directive on this statements or dropping indexes on this temporary tables. And almost each day we have new surprises from IDS 7.3. Now, when a query is working slow we can't tell for sure: is it our fault or is it the Database Server bad optimization or work. Of course we could test the same queries on IDS 7.2, but you know that sometimes production environment and development environment give different results (I agree that this could be a bad design of database and bad coded queries, but not always). Kind Regards, Octav P.S. Of course IDS 7.3 have a lot of nice features, but last two weeks were very hard for us. I'm a bit tired so may be this message is not very objective. I was trying just to show the problems we really have. Evan Carew wrote: > >Art, > >Thanks for the info.
