Migration Question

Hello, all,
We are about to migrate from 9.20HC1 on HP-UX11 to 11.50UC3 on RHEL
and was wondering if anyone knows off the top their head a few things:
Is the migration path of 9.20 to 9.21 and then to 11.50 an absolute
necessity?
If so, what's the best way to obtain the older 9.21? (It's not
available to me in Passport Advantage)
Also, what about going from UNIX to Linux? Any know problems there in
general?
I performed another non-in-place migration years ago, SE on SCO to
9.20 on HP-UX with little trouble except having to edit the dbexport
file a bit. I would think that dbimport in 11.5 would be able to deal
with the export file built by dbexport on 9.2.....or perhaps dbexport/
dbimport is not the preferred method.
Thanks
Dbexport/dbimport is the correct way to go when moving between platforms and
between huge differences in version.

Thanks, Art. That's what I thought (hoped).

I'd agree with this as the ideal, although it's not always viable for large databases. However, as Art says, in your case you have few options. You certainly can't go either directly or indeirectly from your source and target environments since they are on different operating systems, and Informix is not binary compatible between OSs. The question about getting 9.21 is therefore academic, although you may well have struggled to get old versions, and rely as I have had to in the past upon the kindness of cdi contributors (one of Art's colleagues in fact!) who have old versions lying around. It's not in PPA as IBM has deemeed it "end of marketing", and therefore you couldn't possibly want it. To be fair, they can't keep out-of-support products available for ever. Actually this makes me quite curious: if you have access to PPAmedia downloads for Informix that implies you've kept paying maintenance, but for a product on which you could not possibly have received support for several years .... I don't think you should have too many problems with Linux. I'm surprised you want to use a 32-bit version of Informix though. Unless your server is really old it would presumably support 64-bit. You must have at least WorkGroup licences, so why restrict yourself to the 2.7g of memory a UC version will limit you to allocating to an Informix server? rgds N
