If they are untrustworthy, there is no hope for security on the machines - period. If you can't trust the users who know the root password (or otherwise have root access), then no Unix machine is secure, and no data on that machine is secure, regardless of whether Informix is involved or not. If you have Informix software on the machine, those who know the informix password are functionally equivalent to root - at least with respect to the database.
