Re: Can't backup logical logs to /dev/null -Reply

This message has started appearing in Informix
recent versions. My memory is faulty but it seems
to have something to do with changes to the config.
Informix will not allow backups to /dev/null until a
proper archive has been done. This would seem to
be a worthy feature. I have worked around it on my
test systems by backing up logs to /tmp/nullfile, a
file that is symbolically linked to /dev/null. Informix
allows this.

What version of Informix are you running? With
version 7.X and the logical log backup device set
to /dev/null means that the log automatically goes to
a backed up status upon filling.
As a side note, if you are not interested in using the
logical logs for recovery, then why not turn off
transaction logging in your database. This will
GREATLY reduce writes to the logs, and will
require less frequent backups.
