There is a published bug to do with this. We encountered it when connecting from MSAccess. From memory it only concerned comparisons of null and a decimal data type. Informix in Sydney cobbled together a C program that crashed the database everytime. If this sounds like your problem then ask your Informix support to speak to Robert Lee in Sydney.
