On several occasions I have had the opportunity to restore a 7.11
version of informix with ontape and not restore the logs. However, I
have also tried to restore one dbspace with ontape and you then must
roll foward the logs. Ontape backs up the entire system and it is
documented that you can do a partial restore down to the dpspace
level, but it also stats if you do a partial you must roll foward your
logs. If you do a full recovery of the entire system with ontape you
do not have to roll foward your logs. When we attempted the partial
restore without restore the logs the online would not come up. This
is well documented in the backup and recovery guide.
