Do not come crying to Informix or me if something goes wrong. You can run tbtape in the background provided you feed it with the data it needs, and provided that your archive will fit on one tape volume. Typically, this means you run a (Bourne/Korn) shell script such as: -------------------cut------------------- tbtape <<! >tbtape.log 2>&1 0 ! mail -s "Output from TBTAPE: `date`" root informix pn@info-ex.pt < tbtape.log rm -f tbtape.log -------------------cut------------------- The 0 says do a level 0 archive. The blank line says the tape is in the drive. Heaven help you if this is not the case. Ditto if you find the archive needing more than one tape volume, or if a media error occurs, or if almost anything goes wrong. This is why running archives in background is unsupported and unsupportable. Version 6 comes with an automatic facility called ON-Archive to handle these sorts of issues, and it does handle errors and problems during backups, at least to some extent.
