My co. is migrating some AIX Informix IDS 9.40 DB servers to a new datacenter. The new hardware needs to be spec'd. The AIX admins want to go with 1 or 2 CPU machines with fast cpu's. I prefer 4 cpu machines, even with perhaps slower CPUs, to allow Informix to better divide work, for things like parallel queries, etc. A 4GL application runs on the same server as the database. The application is from a 3rd party, with about 40 online users, a relatively small # of OLTP transactions, and large monthly/quarterly/year-end batch processes. Any input in this regard would be appreciated. Thanks.
Assuming that the 2 CPU system is running 2X the 4 CPU system.... I'd go with the one with the 1) faster Disk throughput, the 2) Faster memory access speed and 3) the faster network speed. ;-) M.P. = "GARY PRICE" = <gprice@nationwid = eprovident.com> = To Sent by: ids@iiug.org = ids-bounces@iiug. = cc org = Subj= ect # of cpu' vs. cpu speed [8390] = 02/09/2007 03:16 = PM = = = Please respond to = ids@iiug.org = = = My co. is migrating some AIX Informix IDS 9.40 DB servers to a new datacenter. You might want clarification on the CPUs also. Nowadays, it will probably be (2) dual-core CPUs, which is actually 4. Intel has dual-core CPUs and is working on 4-core ("quad-core") CPUs and I believe Sun also has 2-core and 4-core CPUs. I believe IBM is in the same game. If it *is* (2) dual-core CPUs, you will have 4 CPUs to work with.
