Suppose you have two instances, 1 and 2. You usually execute oninit from $INFORMIXDIR/bin. If you create links so: ln -s $INFORMIXDIR/bin $INFORMIXDIR/1/bin ln -s $INFORMIXDIR/bin $INFORMIXDIR/2/bin and start informix from the linked directory, a ps will show you: /opt/informix/1/bin/oninit or /opt/informix/2/bin/oninit, thus allowing you to identify which is which.
