Alan, you're not thinking of something like:
output to pipe "tr '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'" without headings select * from gen_ids;
are you ? Or 5.0 ? Since mine doesn't work either :-(
Around about now seems to be a good time to make a FIFO and do
the unload down that, if you really want to play this way. The
original post said *without* using an UNLOAD, tho'.

Hmm ... and the adding-the-pipes stuff adds lotsa space: even
select num, "|" d, code from gen_ids;
won't give me better than this, which is probably a good deal worse ...
num d code

Remember to declare nice big variables, I suppose, if you need
to go this way, and watch out for the "leading blanks on the
following fields", if you see what I mean.
Could some kind soul please tell me, BTW, why hitting ^Z completely
mangles my isql display ? I was hoping it'd just stop it temporarily,
but it's never the same again. Is it fixed in slightly-less antique
software, or just something really dim I'm doing ?
