And, just in case what I mean isn't clear, I mean that the problems would occur immediately. The way the transaction log code works is by opening the file in append mode. A normal file has a size smaller than the disk it is on (logical volume if you've got an LVM), and you can extend it. A device file is always as big as the disk space allocated for it, and you cannot extend it.
