Where can I download Administrator's Guide ??
Posted in 2000
A new IDS 7.3 on Linux user couldn't find the Administrator's Guide on Informix's site, then asked how to set up ROOTPATH, assuming he had to create a character-special file /dev/online_root. Replies pointed him to the generic (non-Linux-specific) docs at www.informix.com/answers (plus a free online book at mcp.com's informIT). On ROOTPATH, he was told /dev/online_root is only a sample name: you can use a cooked filesystem file created with touch, owned informix:informix with mode 660, or a block device, since Linux lacked true raw devices then (~10-15% faster). Best practice advised was to point ONCONFIG at a symbolic link rather than the real device, easing recovery and cloning. Resolved by advice.

HI: I just installed IDS7.3 for Linux. The Installation Guide for Linux made reference to "Administrator's Guide" for setting up environment variables. I used keyword search in Informix.com's site but did not get any useful return for such DBA's Guide for Unix/Linux. If you have experience w/ this Guide plz post a WWW addr. to download. Many thanks, Jack@GTEDS@Tampa Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
Hye, it's not the Administrator Guide, but you can fid further information on www.mcp.com in the informIT section... There you'll find a complete free online book (DatabaseIT section) with information on Informix, version, and how-to... If this doesn't answer to your question..post a new question and I'll see what i can do for you... I want to thank Yndigos & Paul Watson's response to my previous post ... Now my question is how to complete ROOTPATH variable setup under Linux. The default value in 'onconfig' file is: ROOTPATH /dev/online_root The Administrator's Guide states that its permission under /dev should be 660. Therefore I should create a special file called 'online_root' under /dev w/ permission 660. If I am not wrong, I should/could not create this file using 'vi' or other editor. This file must be 'character special'. Give me a hint, plz ... There isn't a Linux specific one; you can download the OnLine Admin's Guide from http://www.informix.com/answers/, and any other docs you need too. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
Hello, For a simple cooked file setup for your root dbspace, just go to a filesystem where you have enough freespace, for instance let's say /opt/informix type the following commands: touch rootchunk00 chown informix:informix rootchunk00 chmod 660 rootchunk0 then edit your config file and set ROOTPATH to /opt/informix/rootchunk00 Hope this helps Alp In article <8bcd1g$s3v$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, cwang9@yahoo.com wrote: >I want to thank Yndigos & Paul Watson's response to >my previous post ... >Now my question is how to complete ROOTPATH variable setup >under Linux. >The default value in 'onconfig' file is: >ROOTPATH /dev/online_root >The Administrator's Guide states that >its permission under /dev should be 660. First, the ROOTPATH does NOT have to point to a file/device named
/dev/online_root, that is just an example in the sample ONCONFIG
file. Second, DO NOT use the actual paths of any files or devices
that you plan to use for chunks as the pathnames you give to
informix, always use a symbolic link. I typically set up a subdir
of the informix home named 'disks' or 'chunks' and place all of
these links there. So for ROOTPATH I would have:
ROOTPATH /home/informix/disks/root_chunk_1
where that path is a symbolic link to the actual device or file that
will contain the first root dbspace chunk. This is so if that drive
fails I can relink the pathname to a another device and restore very
quickly. Also if I need to clone this server on a backup machine
I don't have to worry that the devicenames are not the same I just
set up the same links to different devices and restore.
Now to the rest of the question... The files/devices that Informix
will use for ROOTPATH and the other chunks can either be disk or
partition device files of 2GB or smaller or can be filesystem files
in any mounted filesystem. Informix performs best using RAW
(character) devices but Linux does not have true RAW devices without
a patch in the 2.0.x and 2.2.x kernels. This means you can either
link to the block (COOKED) devices or use filesystem files. There
will be a slight performance advantage to using COOKED devices over
files (~10-15%). If you use files, the file must exist so you will
use touch or 'cat </dev/null' to create the empty file (zero length
is OK). As root set the ownership as informix/informix and
permissions to 660. Now create the links you will place in the
ONCONFIG file and pass to onspaces or onmonitor.
