RE: Kansas Highlights
Posted in 2008
Not a technical thread: it's a venue debate about the IIUG user conference being held in Lenexa/Overland Park, Kansas rather than a bigger destination like Las Vegas. Participants traded jokes and complaints about Kansas being dull, Vegas being overused, and the lack of direct flights for European attendees. The nearest thing to a resolution: Art Kagel explained the site was picked deliberately so attendees get access to IBM Informix development staff (more presenters and informal contact), and an IIUG board member noted KC is a two-million-person metro with plenty to do. No technical problem or fix is discussed.

I wonder why people are so "touchy" about Kansas... Do you really need to have Disneyland next to your Convention Center? Even IBM picked Las Vegas, and, to be honest, I'd rather have a week of learning in Kansas then fly the week-end to Vegas, than a week of learning in Las Vegas. The question is... Who is not going to the conference BECAUSE it is in Kansas? jgp -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Jack Parker Sent: samedi 5 janvier 2008 01:16 To: Zachi; informix-list@iiug.org Subject: RE: Kansas Highlights Don't confuse Arkansas with Kansas, or DeepThroat here with Chuck Norris. Well, if you're simply going to training, then you should just have it available on-line, and then you save the whole expense of going anywhere physically. Then you don't even have to socialize and be a human, you can be an uber-geek, sip cola, eat junk food, and nobody will be the wiser. But the point to having conferences is not just about the training and the conference, but also where it's located. Kansas is about as boring as it gets, and there ain't much goin' on there other than an endless supply of farmland and nice people. I have enough trouble getting time off for local events, and nobody I know would be "excited" about a conference in Kansas, it just isn't a conference choice, unless it's for regional event or company like vacuum cleaner salesmen, or maybe an insurance company recognizing their salesman of the year. Las Vegas would be fun, and a lot more memorable than Kansas, and in many ways probably cheaper than Kansas simply because of a lot of promotional opportunities there. In the future, if you time it right, Vegas would be good for techies simply because other tech venues can happen at the same time and allow you to slip over to other events. Kansas is great for watching the grass grow, apples turning brown, that kind of thing. Of course there's no reason why you can't have it somewhere else outside the US, maybe Mexico would be good too, lots of nice resorts with cheap accommodations and it's WARM there too. Not that it's the only place to put on a conference. But I just can't imagine booking a flight to Kansas City for a conference of any kind, it's just not something I would make time for, especially since getting time off is already a challenge. I have to look at something optional like a tech conference as also a mini-vacation, so Vegas would still be more desirable than Kansas City. ( geez, who picked that one? ) BTW If you think Vegas is a shithole, you should drive through El Paso Texas, now THERE is a shithole.

This way they can be enticed not only to present but to drop by for more informal time with us. Because of the choice of location we're getting presentations from IBM people beyond the usual (admittedly excellent) crew. More contact between us users and the developers can only result in a more responsive product development process and I'm all for it. Hey, last time I was consulting (circa 1991) I had a client in a small town in Iowa where, according to the manager of the only hotel, the only entertainment on a weeknight was sitting in one of the 12 or 13 bars discussing whether there were more bars or churches on Main Street (the only street BTW) that month and the only entertainment on the weekend was sitting in one of the 12 or 13 churches discussing ... well, you get the idea. Compared to that Overland KS is a mecca of interest worth beholding. Art S. Kagel Oninit

I'm going despite it being in Kansas City. I have nothing against the place - I've never been, and I certainly have no desire to go to Las Vegas again - but I would like to have been going to a major US city: that is, one to which I could have flown directly.

If you know who to ask, you can make *any* town you visit, an adventure. ;-) Oh and the worst thing about Vegas? Try getting out of there at the end of the conference. Can you say security check through nightmare? Its worth the price of the upgrade to first class just to avoid the long, long lines. _________________________________________________________________ Put your friends on the big screen with Windows Vista® + Windows Live™. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/shop/specialoffers.mspx?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_CPC_MediaCtr_bigscreen_012008
Come on folks. We are not talking about "Great Bend" Kansas, out in the middle of the prairies! Lenexa and Overland Park are suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri - which is a metropolitan area of about 2 million people. There ARE things to do in KC including museums, Art Galleries, Shopping and great restaurants. http://www.visitkc.com/ Don't be so narrow minded. I personally, have been to WAY too many tech conferences in Las Vegas and don't care if I ever go back.
