Connection Manager configuration

Hi All, I implemented High availability data replication (HDR) on my two dedicated servers. They are working fine. Presently they are configured as manual switchover. Now we want to make this a automatic failover. I had searched in goolge and finally came to know that is Connection manager. It is responsible for automatic failover. Now, could you please help me how to work on this connection manager to get successful in making this environment as automatic failover. Searched a lot in google, but didnt get clear idea on where to start and how to configure. What is Connection Manager? Where can i get it, if it is external utility? How to configure? Process to configure and steps involved? Where need to do changes, if required, in onconfig, sqlhosts, hosts, services etc..? What is SLA's and how to use this? Please help me on this. Thank you all for reading my post and for your answers.
There's a lot to cover with Connection Manager, which is probably why you haven't seen a rush of responses. I have sent you a presentation by Tom Beebe that covers some of the configuration. Tom also is giving a webcast on June 29th on it: http://advancedatatools.com/Informix/NextWebcast.html Very briefly though, Connection Manager is supplied with Informix, so you should already have it. Look for the executable "oncmsm" - that's it. It is not separately licensed from the engine. Your connections will initially connect to Connection Manager instead of directly to Informix and it will route them to the applicable server - often the primary server of an HDR pair. It will either redirect the connection request, and/or work as a proxy and forward the communication through it - depends on how it's configured. This will require changes to sqlhosts for the CM connections (and /etc/services if naming the port) and also onconfig, maybe DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIAS. Connection Manger can also monitor the servers and initiate an automatic failover should the primary fail. This requires another change to the onconfig - modifying DRAUTO to 3. It is recommended that the Connection Manager is set up on separate servers from the Informix instances for resiliency, and also multiple servers, for redundancy. That is not strictly necessary though depending on your environment and your needs. Hopefully this is enough to get started. I understand that the documentation is a bit challenging but maybe it will make more sense now... Mike Walker has already pointed to some information that will help you. There are two functions of the connection manager: 1) direct the application to the appropriate server and 2) monitor the servers and determine if a failover is required. If you want to only connect to the current primary, then you can use the connection manager. Likewise if you have an application which can run on a secondary, such as a program creating reports, then you can also use the connection manager. The SLA is basically a network listener which will direct the connection request to the appropriate server. The SLA describes the current status of the server desired. It can also include such things as load balance. Historically for failover, HDR used only DRAUTO, but DRAUTO is not very reliable because the same network path that is used to transmit data to the secondary is also used by the secondary to monitor if the primary is active. That means that if the network should fail, then the secondary could think that the primary was down when it was not. That can cause the secondary to promote itself into a primary while the original primary is actually still active. That will cause a problem. The connection manager allows the monitoring of the servers to be on a different machine and a different network from the primary/secondary server. By configuring the system to be on a distinct server/network, you minimize the risk of a single point of failure causing an inappropriate failover. The connection manager directly connects to the primary and the secondary. Also the connection manager indirectly connects to the primary through it's connection to the secondary. By having multiple ways to detecting if the primary is still active there is a much smaller risk of a single point of failure causing a problem.
