Re: Cannot connect to Online

There is a known bug in Informix 7.13 whereby if a thread dies while =
holding a semaphore then shared memory connections will be disabled. The =
fix is in 7.14 and higher. I suspect that in the last 4 weeks you may =
have taken on a new user that likes to exit his/her session by using =
alt-f4 or rebootPC, in mid-flow.
You have hit upon the workaround. When we struck it here I changed =
INFORMIXSERVER to the tli connection and this *particular* problem went =
away.
There are lots of other problem however with version 7.13. If you think =
you are having an unusually rough time of things with Informix bugs just =
at the moment, you are probably right. 7.13 is an acknowledged pig, which =
is why Informix back ported 7.20 to create 7.14. =20
7.14 is much more stable, but not as good as the 7.23/24 series, as the =
backward port of 7.20 let in few bugs in as well, but nothing as serious =
as 7.13.
If you can, I would upgrade to the 7.2x series.

Hello out there,
since 4 weeks, there's a very strange behaviour with INFORMIX Online =
7.13.UC3=20
on HP-UX 10.01. From time to time it happens, that no new user can =
establish a=20
connection to Online (the process hangs, until online shutdown). Users=20
currently logged in can continue their work without any problems. But when =
a=20
currently logged in user closes the connection and tries to reestablish =
it,=20
this user also hangs. All I can do is a "onmode -ky; oninit" to reboot =
online.=20
After this everything is working fine again for a while.
I've configured 2 connection methods:
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,200,CPU
NETTYPE soctcp,1,30,NET
I've discovered that the above described problem only occurs on=20
ipcshm-connection. If I change INFORMIXSERVER to the tcp/ip-connection, I =
can=20
connect to Online. So I think there must be a problem with the shared =
memory.=20
The "onstat -g seg" gives the following:
INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.13.UC3 -- On-Line -- Up 09:18:59 -- 526000 =
Kbytes
Segment Summary:
(resident segments are locked)
id key addr size ovhd class blkused blkfree

29 1381517315 ebf00000 2154496 640 M 260 3
There are no error messages in the INFORMIX or system log file!
I don't have any ideas where to search for an error. The system is =
running=20
now for more than 2 years. There was no INFORMIX update! The problem =
occurs=20
the first time 4 weeks ago.
On the machine runs a third party product which uses Online. Is it =
possible,=20
that this application crashes the shared memory area of Online? Until now =
I=20
believed, that this is not possible, but in the last 4 weeks there were=20
several updates of this software. Ofcourse the vendor denies, that our=20
problems could be caused by his software.
Can anybody give me a hint, what's going on here?
Any hints are welcome. Thanks in advance...
Very desperatly
