RE: Raw devices on SUN

Just an actual Sun E450 example of what Paul is describing, note that target file should have the 660 and informix:informix lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 18 Jul 30 15:12 /ondata/devdbs1_0 -> /dev/rdsk/c5t0d0s3 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 46 Mar 5 17:23 /dev/rdsk/c5t0d0s3 -> ../../devices/pci@6,4000/scsi@2,1/sd@0,0:d,raw crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 32,603 Mar 5 17:22 ../../devices/pci@6,4000/scsi@2,1/sd@0,0:d,raw Chunks address chk/dbs offset size free bpages flags pathname 16036db0 10 10 0 1024000 676 PO- /ondata/devdbs1_0 * /dev/rdsk/c5t0d0s0 partition map * Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory 2 5 01 0 17682084 17682083 3 0 00 0 4197879 4197878 4 0 00 4197879 4197879 8395757 5 0 00 8395758 4197879 12593636 6 0 00 12593637 4197879 16791515 7 0 00 16791516 890568 17682083 Geoff Poole -----Original Message----- From: Paul watson [SMTP:watsop@russellcorp.co.uk] Sent: 04 August 1999 09:11 To: Mukund.Shevkar@dgs.ca.gov Cc: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Raw devices on SUN I'm assuming that there is no volume management in the way. df -k should give you a list of the disk and FS's on them, from this you can tell which slices on the disk can't be used. You might also like to check /etc/vfstab to make sure there are no umounted FS's lying around. prtvtoc <disk> will give you the slice details for the table. Hopefully you've got some that aren't allocated to a FS. Any of unused slices can be used for raw devices, you could use the used ones as well but the OS won't be happy:-)) If you are concerned that a FS might be on a slice that you think is unused just try and mount the slice and see if it errors Make a directory outside of the /dev system for the location of your link files, eg /chunks or ${INFORMIXDIR}/chunks etc. Then use ln -s <full path to device> <chunk name>. Make sure the permissions are informix:informix 660 on the chunkname and hopefully, unless I've forgotten something, you've got useable chunks for your instance If you are using VM then you need to use the VM software to generate the disk slices for you and this will depend on whether you are using Veritas, Disksuite etc Paul Watson WF Software Ltd Tel: +44 1436 674729 Fax: +44 1436 678729 www.wfsoftware.com # If you broke it, hide the evidence >>> "Shevkar, Mukund" <Mukund.Shevkar@dgs.ca.gov> 08/03/99 05:00PM >>> Hi list! Can u advise me exactly how to create the raw device? How to create the links to the devices. I'll install Informix 7.31 UC2 and am confident on installation part. I'm stuck up on the job. Please advise me exact steps.
