Help with read in 3.3 ace report

I am working on an old Altos system with a mid 80's version of 3.3 I have to alter a report and to do so I need to read a field as they call then, that is not selected in the existing reads. Can I add read fieldname where idnu = param then later in the FORMAT section say if (fieldname = "A" or fieldneme = "B") then let total_cost = 25 else let total_cost = 50 There are 2 other existing reads, but both read into something. do I have to read into something? The fieldname is in the selected database for the report and all I need is the value in that field where the passed = the file_no for that record. BTW if this was posted twice I am sorry but I had some news trouble, please forgive me.
