Upgrade 11.70 to 12.10
Posted in 2018
Someone planning an upgrade from Informix 11.70.FC8W1 to 12.10.FC10 on Linux (Primary/SDS) asked about pitfalls, performance and whether UPDATE STATISTICS is mandatory. Replies: statistics rebuild is the documented requirement (at least for procedures immediately, tables later), though one user reported no measurable difference in practice; expect no dramatic performance change but possible plan shifts; review new ONCONFIG parameters. FC10 bugs were flagged — missing rows from sysmaster:sysrstcb (workaround: disable the new sysrstcbscb index via sysobjstate and restart), a B-tree cleaner issue with non-default page sizes, and broken 'onmode -c block' on RSS. The poster decided to wait for FC11; no further outcome recorded.

Hi. We are running 11.70.FC8W1 on Linux in a Primary / SDS config. Everything works well. Now I'm planning to upgrade to the newest 12.10.FC10. I've been testing the upgrade process (on a restored instance without SDS) and we have run our application and everything seems to be OK. Before doing this I'd like to hear if anyone has had any major problems with a similar upgrade, maybe related to performance, etc. Is update statistics a must? I have not seen any performance issues on the upgraded instance, but we can not test everything :) Can I expect generally better performance with 12.10 or will it be very similar? Any pitfalls with new ONCONFIG parameters? Any pitfalls at all? :) Thanks in advance, -Snorri
Hmmmmm.... so much to say. I've been involved mostly in upgrades from 11.50 to 12.10. In almost every situation it was ok, but the important thing is that it's ok *in your environment* Every version has it's problems (as can be seen in the next release "fixlist"), so careful testing is the most important thing and apparently you did it. Regarding UPDATE STATISTICS, you *should do it*. It's a requirement migration step. And yes, I know that it can take a very long time. At least do it for procedures (very fast) and then do it for tables as soon as possible. There was an RFE to request that the upgrade process converts the old stats into a new format (if the format changes) to avoid that slow step, but it was declined: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=33799 Please open it again if you, like me think this is one of the major issues for upgrades. Version 12.10 has several performance features, but I wouldn't expect any dramatic performance change. But you must be alert because a query plan change may speed up or slow down significantly a query. Typically my experience with 12.10 is very good. The changes are almost on the positive side of things. Regarding the $ONCONFIG, 12.10 has several new parameters, and yes, you should check them and choose the right options for you. One of the good thing it has is the session limits (locks, memory, temporary space usage etc.) Now.... the not so good news. Up till now I've found an annoying/serious bug on FC10. Due to a change in sysmaster, queries on sysmaster:sysrstcb may miss some rows. One may think that's an internal thing, but there are many scripts out there and monitoring tools that depend on this. The fix should be included in FC11 which shouldn't take too long to show up. An alternative would be to use a workaround which apparently doesn't have side effects, but that's not an official suggestion: 1- Run this on sysmaster with user Informix: UPDATE sysobjstate SET state = 'D' WHERE name = 'sysrstcbscb' AND tabid = (SELECT t.tabid FROM systables t WHERE t.tabname = 'sysrstcb'); (verify that one record is updated) 2- Restart the engine This is basically an "hack" to disable a new index introduced in FC10, which is where the bug exists. Naturally FC11 wouldn't need this, but you'd have to wait and then redo your tests. Regards. Thanks Fernando for your insight. Regs, -Snorri

These comments are based on our experience.
I have been through the 11.70 to 12.10.FC10 upgrade several times in full
scale test environments prior to live implementation on some large systems. It
takes too long to run UPDATE STATISTICS to do it during the upgrade process.
From our experience I would say a full UPDATE STATISTICS run is not required
immediately after this particular upgrade and we saw no difference
before/after whatever the documentation says. Our system is heavily monitored
so I believe we would have spotted anything amiss. Having said this, if you
can do a full run in a time acceptable to your business by all means do it.
Stability on 12.10.FC10 is excellent, however it does contain some new bugs
(of course) and with 12.10.FC11 imminent you might be better off waiting for
this. In particular there is a B-Tree cleaner bug affecting tables with
non-default page sizes plus the RSS snapshot functionality ('onmode -c block'
on RSS) is broken.
Ben.
... but that btree cleaner bug, afaik, was not a new one ;-)

Thanks Ben. This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I'll probably wait for FC11 but I have to read up on that index bug to see if it could affect us. Do you by any chance have the bug #? Thanks, -Snorri
