Here's an example of what you're writing about from Illustra: the PLS DataBlade from Personal Library Software apparently uses a memory- management function, "free", rather than the API's memory-management functions. This function conflicts with a function used by the Illustra server on SGI/Irix 6.2, causing very poor performance although not, in my experience, data corruption or actual server crashes.
