Migrate 11.7 Informix database to an other server
Posted in 2015
A user wanted to copy a 1.5 TB Informix 11.70 instance on Windows 2008 R2 to a second identically configured server, but lacked disk space for an ontape backup, so he asked whether simply copying all chunks (root, logs, temp) over the empty target would work. Replies suggested HDR or ifxclone, or an external backup using 'onmode -c block'/'unblock' — though HDR/replication requires logged databases, which his weren't. Consensus: a raw chunk copy does work provided the source instance is cleanly shut down after a checkpoint (onmode -ky/-uy); copying a non-quiesced instance risks pages not yet flushed to disk and later corruption.

Hi, I have a huge informix 11.7 database on a Windows 2008 r2 (more than 1.5
TB), I have installed an other empty database with the same driver and the
same strutcure of chunks and dbsapce and also onconfig, I planify to replicate
this database on the second server, I'm wondering if I take a copy of al
chunks including rootdbs ,logdbs, tempsdbs and override the chunks on the
second server, it will work or not, I use Tsm to copy the chunks from the
first server and overide the chunks on the second server.
for info, I have already try ontape but the file generated is huge and I did
not have enough space.
If the Informix version and platform are the same, you can do a backup oun
source and restore on target.
Eventually if the downtime is an issue, you can create an HDR pair and the
secondary server (your new server) will receive all the transactions from
the source. Once the're in sync, stop the applications, make sure they're
in sync, disconnect the primary and change the secondary into a standard
server. Nearly no downtime.
All your databases need to have logging for this to be an option.

I agree with my colleague that this sounds idea for HDR. = ; In
addition there is
a simple utilize which will automatically clone t= he data over the
network
called ifxclone. It can run several strea= ms in parallel to speed up
the transfer.

Hi,I have no space to take ontape backup and pas single via stdio is possible
but I dont know how to make rsh on windows,
I want to know if What I'M doing will work.
Answers:
1 - Copying storage to initialize a secondary server: You can do this, but
only if the copy us made under an external back up condition which is
initiated on the source server with onmode -c block. While the server is
blocked copy the chunks to the target server (or to an intermediate
location), then unblock the source server with onmode -c unblock. Start the
new server with "oninit -PHY" which is a physical only restart (no
recovery). Then register the HDR relationship with onmode -d primary
<secondary name> on the primary and onmode -d secondary <primary name>.
Voila! This will only work if a) all databases are logged, and b) you have
enough logical log space on the primary so that the logs will not wrap
while you are copying the files and starting the new engine.
2 - You can use the new ifxclone utility to clone the primary to a new
secondary. Under v11.70 you cannot create the new server as an HDR
secondary, but rather as an RSS secondary, but once the new secondary is in
sync with the primary you can promote it to a secondary by running the
appropriate onmode -d commands as above. The advantage of this is that it
does not require a third set of disk space for an intermediate copy of the
chunks. It archives the primary to a pipe and restores the new secondary
directly from that same pipe. Run ifxclone on the new secondary machine NOT
on the primary (that's not well documented). You can even have ifxclone
optionally clone the ONCONFIG file from the primary for you.

Hi, My database is nologing mode, I have shut down Informix on the first
server and I'm trying this copy now to the second server in wich I have the
same informix strutcure, you think this wil not work.
I want no connexion between the two servers, just a copy of the fiorst.
I have no space to do ontape , and rsh on widnows is not working, so only I
want to make such as a clone by copiyng all chunks to the second server, you
think this will not work ??
If the server is shutdown then the copy will be fine and you should be able
to start the server on the other machine, yes. However, you mentioned
"replicate". If by that you just mean copy the server and then have two
completely independent servers that initially have the same data but from
then on will be different, that's fine, but if you meant that you want to
be able to keep the two servers in sync so that the new one always has the
same data as the original, then that will only work if all of the databases
on the servers are logged (either buffered, unbuffered, or ANSI mode but
not UNLOGGED).

thanks for answering, and yes I want just to have a security copy for this huge database (>1 TB), no connexion or sync between the two servers are needed, for shuting down its no problem because the source is a huge yes but not so used by the users, I can bring it down in the Weekends and no problem for that, what I want is just a simple copy to the target server by overding all the chunks on the target wich has the same empty database strcuture. for info the two servers are not the same in terms of hardware neither of networking (not the same domain). so will my try work. If yes, I will do this procedure every month. Thanks a lot
You can use the external back technology to allow user to con= tinue
to read the system, but prevent modifications.
onmode -c b= lock
copy data to other server
onmode -c unblock

I have no need to keep the database up,but I want to know if it would work, the simple copy of all chunks to an empty same structure database. thanks
The problem that you will run into is that if the source instance is not
completely quiescent AND a successful checkpoint has not been done while
quiescent AND only then the database chunks are copied AND the database is not
active during this time.....Then it is possible that not all of the current
pages are physically on disk. If all of the pages are not physically on disk
when you perform the copy, then you will have problems when trying to bring up
the target system. Some of those problems might occur during the start-up of
the server, but some might not occur for some time after you started the
instance.
What you are proposing is rather risky. It would be much better to purchase
enough additional storage devices to handle a backup and then restore on the
new system.

Ok, so How can I force a complete checkpoint before bringing down the database and copying the chunks. I can add that this database is not transactional and I can bring it down at any moment. regards
Using onmode -ky or -uy will perform a checkpoint and shutdown the server.
The -k option forces sessions to exit -u waits for all sessions to quit on
their own or times out.
