IUS has lvarchar type, which can be up to 32767 in size. It can handle any type of data (user defined complex data types are stored internally as lvarchar). Really, if you have a single column data item larger than that, you should consider a blob (or smartblob in IUS). The real issue seems to be variable-length data larger than 255 but smaller than say a page. Lvarchar handles this perfectly. However, the original question appears to be referring to ESQL (i.e. C) data types, not SQL types. Dave
