You should also be able to read the .dat file directly via a C-program or in some cases also with other tools. The file format is simple enough for this. It is simply fixed length records delimited by a single linefeed character. The data is dependent on the language used to write the file. Assuming this is C the fields presumably contains binary representation of the C-variables that where written. So if you read it as fixed length records and move the raw data into C-variables you should get correct values. These are then easy to write out again as ascii or do whatever else you want to do with them. If a record is deleted I think the line feed delimiter is set to 00 hex.
