I can't speak for your experiences, but I've run restores from Onbar/Netbackup without any problems and have not installed any patches. Netbackup does require a little patience to configure with Onbar, but so does every other storage manager. And at least one (ADSM) that I've worked with was more difficult to manage from my perspective. So my recommendation is to use whatever you like, but I don't see any problem with Netbackup.
