Which informix middleware to use?

I am starting to evaluate the adaptation of our client/server application to Informix. We currently support Oracle, Sybase and MS SQL server. In each of the previous case, we have been using the native API, to get the best possible performance (OCI for Oracle, CT/Lib for Sybase and ODBC for MS-SQL since it is the native API here). After quickly reading documentation about Informix SDK, I could not find such a native API; there are: - Informlix-CLI (=ODBC driver), but it does not seem native (otherwise, why would they package Intersolv ODBC driver for ODBC 3.0) - ESQL/C, but I do not want a preprocessor - INFORMIX-Object Interface for C++: it is the one? Don't they have a C API below? Am I missing something?
Informix 9.x supports a libthdmi interface that provides very fast connectivity to the server.
