ISQL install problem
Posted in 2006
Andy migrated from SCO/Informix 7 to Red Hat EL4 with IDS 10 and added ISQL 7.32 into $INFORMIXDIR. dbaccess connects fine, but isql fails with error -930 "cannot connect to the database server", even specifying database@servername. Suggestions: check both tools run in the same environment, reinstall, or install ISQL in a separate directory with its own INFORMIXDIR/PATH and wrapper scripts (none helped). Clive wondered if only a shared-memory connection was defined in sqlhosts; Art Kagel advised that older products (ISQL 7.32) must be installed before newer ones (IDS 10), so reinstalling the engine last should fix it. No confirmation from the poster is recorded.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help with regards to an ISQL
installation.
We're currently migrating from SCO open server and informix 7.x to a
Red Hat Enterprise 4 server with IDS 10. Under the initial
installation, we simply installed IDS and ported over our database
tables. We could access things fine through dbaccess, but discovered
that we needed to install ISQL for extra functionality.
Given the installation order for Informix, we uninstalled IDS (copying
over the onconfig and sqlhosts files), the installed ISQL to
$INFORMIXDIR. We then re-installed IDS, copied back the sqlhosts and
onconfig files and tested.
The problem is that we can still access the tables etc through
dbaccess, but when trying to connect with isql, we get an error
message:
"930: cannot connect to the database server (<servername>)"
Now the servername is correct for the entry in the sqlhosts file, so
it's trying to access the correct server by the looks of things. Even
when I try to force isql to connect to a specific database at launch
through 'isql database@servername', I get the same problem.
The thing that baffles me is that I can still connect through dbaccess.
I would have thought that if the config files were setup incorrectly
then both isql and dbaccess would have a problem. The only thing that
I can think of is that because the databases and tables were copied
over originally before isql was installed that it is something to do
with that.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Andy
Andrew
Are you running dbaccess and isql from the same environment?
ie
$ dbaccess - runsnext command in same session
$ isql - fails
Are you running as informix or as another user? Can informix run
onmonitor with no problems?
Installation of ISQL is independant of the data or db structure this
is either an installation or environment problem.

Hi Keith, thanks for your quick reply.
Both dbaccess and isql are being run from the same environment. I've
tried it both as the root user and as informix.
The informix can run onmonitor ok, and I can check the databases fine.
It's good to know that the structure of the database is independent. I
assumed that this was the case, but I was curious. Unless you have any
other suggestions, I'll try an re-install of informix.
Thanks,
Andy
Andrew
Probably best idea. What versions of IDS and ISQL are you using? I'm
not aware of any incompatibility however ....

Keith I'm using version 10 of IDS and Version 7.32 of ISQL. As far as I'm aware they are compatible, so I'll try a reinstall. Thanks Andy
Keith I reinstalled everything and still have the same problem. Don't suppose that you have any further suggestions? Thanks Andy

Just for sh**s and giggles I'd start over
Install the engine - test dbaccess
Install isql to a different dir
make sqlhosts the same in both dirs/etc
Set INFORMIXDIR and PATH etc to point to the 'isql dir'
Test isql
If that works create a bash script the sets the appropriate
INFORMIXDIR/PATH and runs $DIR2/bin/isql or $DIR1/bin/dbaccess as
appropriate and put them earlier in your path.

Hi Clive, thanks for your reply, I installed to a different directory, but I still can't get it to work! Are the any other config files used for stipulating such things other than the onconfig and the sqlhosts? I'm sure this is going to be annoyingly simple! Thanks, Andy

You have to modify the installation order so that older releases (like ISQL
7.32) are installed BEFORE newer components (like IDS 10.00). Reinstall the
engine and it should be OK.
