RE: SE 5 tuning/optimizing on SCO

Cant tell much from here except your Informix versions are years out of
support. (Upgrade all products).
What is causing the high %wio? Is it shortage of memory or is it high data
activity or something else?
Have a look at more sar figures - freemem, paging space in use and disk IO.
If high database activity, run the application with set explain on and look
for high costs and sequential scans.

Subject: SE 5 tuning/optimizing on SCO
Importance: High
Hi All
I need some pointers in tuning (Optimizing) our Informix SE server.
SCO Unix vers 5.0.5
Informix SE 5.08.UD1
SQL vers 4.17.UC1
RDS vers 4.17.UC1
We running a Pentium Pro with a SCSI hd and 128meg ram. Disk space 67% used.
sar reports the following, when a user request a month report:
3.2v5.0.5 PentII(D)ISA 11/05/2003
08:53:05 %usr %sys %wio %idle (-u)
08:53:10 1 2 98 0
08:53:15 1 2 97 0
08:53:20 1 1 98 0
Average 1 2 98 0
I have tried to optimize the 4gl code and indexes to these reports and
tables.
Would it help if we would install a second IDE hard disk on the
onboard IDE controller and use it for the database log files?
I take it more ram will also help...? Any other idees?
Blessings from Cape Town the gateway to Africa.
Franz
