FW: IDS to DB2 conversion
Posted in 2004
Not a technical support thread but a discussion/debate about IBM's Informix-to-DB2 migration story. An IBM/IIUG-side poster argued that some large customers (Home Depot, Sears, Wal-Mart) had migrated, that DB2 was absorbing IDS/XPS/RedBrick features, and pointed to the Informix product line and strategy update for details. Others pushed back, asking why such successes weren't publicised, noting only a couple of known cases and that the migration toolkit was still in beta after three years. The exchange quickly degenerated into banter; no technical problem is solved and no resolution is recorded.

OTC and all, I'd just suggest that we try to be more factual so all of us can learn without having to dodge through the humorous and less humorous banter. We all know that DB2 has not been adopted en-masse by Informix users. However there are accounts - large ones - where this has happened: Home Depot, Sears and Walmart to name some. That some companies have had difficulties migrating application suites from IDS to DB2, it is a fact. But any database migration is tough and often the expertise required to accomplish it underestimated. IBM has said that it continues to work on bringing IDS, XPS and RedBrick features into DB2. That isn't easy work either and it takes time. I'd suggest referring to the latest version of "IBM Informix Product Line and Strategy Update" http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/portfolio/. And if you want more detail on the DB2 plan, work with IIUG to obtain the specifics. Oh? How come no-one is hearing about them? I'd have thought IBM would be shouting from the rooftops about successful migrations where DB2 was trouncing IDS. > That some companies have had difficulties migrating application suites > from IDS to DB2, it is a fact. Fred, Obnoxio raises a good point. Why are we not seeing these successes trumpted from the roof-tops? Instead, all we see is (correct me if I'm wrong) a minor US university, and a company in Belgium some people think might be converting too.
