While I already mentioned the looping syntax, what about how you call "sub programs"? aka procedures and functions? It looks like you have to pass by reference, yet if your first parameter is CHAR(4), you have to create a data type char4 as CHAR(4) and then in your procedure input the first variable as a type char4. Like I said, its a kludge.
