While attempting to compile PHP 4.4.4 may be helpful in isolating the problem, using PHP4 for a new project is IMHO a bad idea. PHP5 has several advantages over PHP4 beyond the OOP kind of stuff, not the least of which is PDO, which finally introduced a standardized database API and parametrized queries, something that Python has had for many years. (Did I mention I like Python? ;) I maintain a "legacy" PHP4 application, and whenever I have to make changes to it, I wish I had the time to port it to PHP5. Of course you can get the job done in PHP4, but I cringe at the notion that somebody would choose PHP4 instead of PHP5 for a new project.
