Gurus, question about 7.31

Guys, If I want to write a backup to file system in 7.31 and my backup is over 2 Gig and we are on the really old hardware that limits us to 2 Gig file sizes, what can I do to break up the backup into two pieces? I think it goes something like this: 1. Set the TAPESIZE to 2000000 2. Take the backup 3. When it says "swap the tape", mv the backup file to backup.1 4. Press enter -- Bye now, Obnoxio "There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the Labour Party. They promised you order, they promised you peace, and all they demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent."
I haven't tried this but couldn't you just set your TAPESIZE to less than 2 Gig and then move the file and create a new file and press the enter key or "Y" -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Tomchik, Kate Sent: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 9:30 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Gurus, question about 7.31 [12163] Guys, If I want to write a backup to file system in 7.31 and my backup is over 2 Gig and we are on the really old hardware that limits us to 2 Gig file sizes, what can I do to break up the backup into two pieces? I pretty sure there use to be a contribution in the IIUG Repository that did all this automatically. It pretty much renamed the file when it reached the 2 gig limit and created a new device file to continue the backup. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the name or the contributor. > To: ids@iiug.org > From: Kate_Tomchik@homedepot.com > Subject: Gurus, question about 7.31 [12163] > Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 10:29:47 -0400 > > Guys, > If I want to write a backup to file system in 7.31 and my backup is over > 2 Gig and we are on the really old hardware that limits us to 2 Gig file > sizes, what can I do to break up the backup into two pieces? > > Thanks, > Kate Tomchik, IT Architect > 770-433-8211 X 10922 > kate_tomchik@homedepot.com (with high priority to page) > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > -------------- > "Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth." -Franklin D. > Roosevelt > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > _________________________________________________________________ Make every e-mail and IM count. Kate:
Do you mean an ontape archive? You will do best to use an Expect script to
manage ontape. It would, when prompted for a new tape, rename the existing
tape file appropriately (ie archive level, date, time, perhaps servernum,
and tape file sequence number) and touch a new empty one setting its
permissions. You can also have the script verify that the existing 'tape'
file is empty and if not rename it and create a new one to avoid accidental
overwrites.
A similar Expect script can be used to feed the multiple tape files back to
ontape -p or -r for restores, renaming or linking each tape file in sequenceto the TAPEDEV setting.
