------------ TO: John White (white%elsouth@concert.net) Regarding Benchmarks between Informix-SE, and On-Line. Your benchmarks look sufficient to test most DB conditions. From my experience, ON-Line does indeed offer major improvements in speed. However if your system is CPU bound, (ie. slow clock speed) then the performance wont be as siginificant as you expect. However, Disk IO can be optimized if you build your table space using RAW partitions on your disk, instead of UNIX files, which are used by the SE engine. I have converted databases from SE to On-Line on the following systems: Altos-386, NCR-3000, SUN-4/370. The Altos system was the only one where we had to upgrade the CPU clock speed from 16MHZ to 25MHZ, in order to get the best performance. All these systems have 20 to 25 continuous users every day. I suggest that you optimize your Unix system as best as possible by investigating the results of the SAR utility, and making the necessary kernal tuning adjustments. This way you'll know if the Informix SE engine can handle the load without going to On-Line. Good Luck...
