Manual to the Manual

Just curious does anyone recall how Informix has reacted to websites that post information about how to do things with informix in an un-official capacity? Where I work we've come up with a handful of generic procedures and guides for the newbie that are much shorter, concrete, examples of going from nothing to something with far less verbosity and theory. I guess you'd call it a kindergarden or "kinder"garten mentality. I know when I was starting they would have been helpful.. and its very hard to recall the useful information wanted, and attitude you had before you knew "everything"..;-) Also, we created an opinionated.. "guide to the guides" and "manual to the manuals" index/review of the informix documentation. I don't know if the world is ready for that.. but I don't see that kind of information even in the Unoffical FAQ from the UK.. so, I'm just guessing that it's not welcome. In this litigant happy world, and "cease and decist" or "sue and ask later" environment. I feel much safer "Asking for permission" than "Asking for forgiveness.." I wish there were a Source Forge like effort at Informix where we could park our webpages and content so that "they" could rate, rank, or accept responsibility for publicized content and have the choice of pulling it without sic-ing the lawyers on us.. if they do that sort of thing. .. Unfortunately "commercial companies" have associated themselves with "big bad brother" under the umbrella of "protecting our stock holders interests" just looking for a way to co-exist. comment is invited.
No complain about the FAQ! I've even posted stuff about bugs here and no-one complained. Check the bug about 7.30 4gl with it adding spaces to strings. When I mentioned that UK support were still looking into it, the very next morning, first thing I got a call back from UK Tech Support! Informix are great in this way. john.willis@txucom.com wrote in message <8r5fv2$gk$1@news.xmission.com>... > > >Just curious does anyone recall how Informix >has reacted to websites that post information >about how to do things with informix in an >un-official capacity? > >Where I work we've come up with a handful of >generic procedures and guides for the newbie >that are much shorter, concrete, examples of >going from nothing to something with far less >verbosity and theory. > >I guess you'd call it a kindergarden or >"kinder"garten mentality. > >I know when I was starting they would have been >helpful.. and its very hard to recall the useful >information wanted, and attitude you had before you >knew "everything"..;-) > >Also, we created an opinionated.. Perhaps a new section or more likely a link in one of the later sections about available Informix resources. Certainly I'll add it to my Web Site + the www.iiug.org website. >In this litigant happy world, and "cease and decist" or "sue >and ask later" environment. I feel much safer "Asking for >permission" than "Asking for forgiveness.." > As longas it is not obviously a) a personal attack or b) wrong or c) grossly offensive or d) illegal to post then I'll certainly post it and ask later..it would be hard fo a company to sue you before at least asking you to remove the offending material I like way that to download Oracle you have to agree not to publish benchmarks ithout Oracles permission. Odd that Informix didn't have that restriction last time I looked. Certainly the Informix downloads from Intraware a year ago had no such restrictions! Pity I can't benchmark Oracle vs Informix and prove which one is faster then legally publish the results! >I wish there were a Source Forge like effort at Informix >where we could park our webpages and content so that "they" >could rate, rank, or accept responsibility for publicized >content and have the choice of pulling it without sic-ing the >lawyers on us.. if they do that sort of thing. .. I don't know about the other Informix folks, but I personally find the information in comp.databases.informix to be rather useful. By browsing it I can often find out what the customer base is thinking and what their needs are. Also if I see somthing that I think will cause problems, well - I respond with a warning like --- "Don't Do That...!!!!" ;-) john.willis@txucom.com wrote: > Just curious does anyone recall how Informix > has reacted to websites that post information > about how to do things with informix in an > un-official capacity? > > Where I work we've come up with a handful of > generic procedures and guides for the newbie > that are much shorter, concrete, examples of > going from nothing to something with far less > verbosity and theory. > > I guess you'd call it a kindergarden or > "kinder"garten mentality. > > I know when I was starting they would have been > helpful.. and its very hard to recall the useful > information wanted, and attitude you had before you > knew "everything"..;-) > > Also, we created an opinionated.. Post to IIUG Website if nowhere else. There already exists a source code repository, etc. Perhaps even also donate the material to Informix's own IDN website... I've never seen Informix Corp have a problem with such info. I give "unauthorized" and "workaround" solutions daily on the Ask the Informix Pro section of the www.devx.com website on almost a daily basis, and it was indirectly through Informix (Informix Press) that I got the gig there. Don't worry about it. Post away.
