Informix hangs on 2nd startup?
Posted in 2000
On Linux (SuSE 6.4, later also RedHat 6.1/6.2) with IDS 9.20 (IIF.2000), the poster could start the server fine, but after taking it offline a second startup from onmonitor hung at "Initializing... please wait" and locked up the whole machine, requiring a cold reset and re-initialising the dbspaces. Suggestions included shared-library/distribution mismatches and stracing oninit, but the fix was the ONCONFIG NOAGE parameter: changing NOAGE from 1 to 0 cured it, and the server then ran on all three distributions.

Hello, I am using informix 2000 on Suse 6.4 Linux. I have 9.20 installed along with the 4GL package. I have successfully started my server with the Onmonitor utility, everything works great!! I then take the server to Quiescent mode with the 'graceful-shutdown' mode. I can then take it back to 'online' mode and everything still works. BUT! If I take the server to Quiescent mode and then to off-line. When I go back to 'startup' in onmonitor I get "Initalizing... please wait". Then I get the "Press return to continue". The system is dead at this point! I cannot go to any other virtual terminals and I can't interupt any processes. I have to do a cold reset. After the system comes backup I have to re-initialize the dataspaces and start the server again. Any ideas? Lach

David,
NOAGE is already equal to 1.
Has anyone seen this behaviour on RedHat 6.2.
I'm about to do a fresh install on a RedHat OS instead of SuSE.
Thanks

It's a known problem running on most releases other than RH6.2.
Probably some shared library mismatch. Remember Informix certifies
with RH.

Exact same problem or is something different. There are problems you can encounter on RH6 for which there are workarounds and yes 9.21 does address some of these. So...if different be specific. I have Informix IIF.2000 9.20 running on Mandrake Linux 7.0, which is
based on RedHat, and I don't have this problem.
Perhaps you can strace the oninit executable and see where it fails?

Hello Again, This is justs to let the list know I have installed RH6.2 and I have the exact same problem. Any chance it is fixed in 9.21?? Art,
Same problem with RH6.2
So much for certification!

Art, Exactly the same problem! RH6.2 and SuSE6.4 have the identical problem of the when in onmonitor, take the server to graceful shutdown and then off-line. THen try to startup the server again. All you get is "Initalizing please wait" then "Press Return to continue". The whole machine is dead at this point. Hard reset only to bring it back. THen you have to initalize the dataspaces again Thanks Lach "Art S. Kagel" wrote: > Exact same problem or is something different. Hello again, Okay, all set now. It was the NOAGE=1 setting in the onconfig that caused me 2 days of headaches. I knew I had a problem when RH61 didn't work. So in summary I have now tested (lightly) RH61, RH62 and SuSE64 all install and run nicely. All OS I tested have no updates applied. Thanks again for the help from the list.
