No idea about the price of Ix EPS 8.3, but my experience with the sales staff taught me a few things. 1. They will try to find out how much money you have, then charge you that much. 2. Their pricing options are so flexible that they can basically accomplish number 1. above over a wide range of estimates of how much money you have. 3. Prices of items will change depending on the rest of the package. In other words, I was told that Foundation 2000 for Linux was $2200, and tech support was $5000 or something. When I said that in that case I didn't want support, I was told that the price of Foundation 2000 without support was $3400. 4. Despite this, they may give you a break at the last minute. I ended up only paying $2200 instead of $3400, although they quoted me $3400. 5. For Foundation 2000 -- and for most or all Informix products that I know of -- there is actually no process that checks whether you have more than the registered numbers of users using the product at once. At least that's what a tech support person told me. So when the sales staff tries to sell you extra licenses for numbers of users at an installation -- or licenses for more than one CPU, for that matter -- the number you buy is basically up to your honesty. You can buy more user licenses, but this seems to have absolutely no effect on your software, pro or con. 6. As the numbers in 3. above imply, they seem to make most of their money off tech support. My previous experience with tech support has been mixed. The times that they have been better than this group at answering questions are few. However, you do get software updates and the production emergency repair service -- or at least you used to -- where they would dial into your machine and repair the database fairly quickly if it crashed while in production. Of course, the times I saw them do this they used a simple program that I could have used if they had wanted to give it to users.
