If you have USING }strings that are repeated often (eg: "mm/dd/yyyy"), you can reduce (but }not eliminate) the threat of these errors: } }REPORT ..... }DEFINE dtdstr CHAR(10) } }... } }FORMAT }PAGE HEADER }IF PAGENO = 1 THEN } -- first time in, set USING strings } LET dtdstr = "mm/dd/yyyy" }END IF }... } }PRINT ... date_variable USING dtdstr }... }PRINT ... another_date_variable USING dtdstr } }More current versions of 4GL (4.12UD, I think) reduce (johnl may say }eliminate, even) this problem. Any release from 4.12.UC1 upwards has error -4518 completely eliminated. The bug number for this was B1857. There are now some new bugs, previously concealed by B1857, which can lead to -4339 errors -- no more memory at all. These problems typically only show up when you run a large report with internal sorting (ORDER BY rather than ORDER EXTERNAL BY). These bugs are not fixed in any released versions of the products; they did not show up in time to catch the 4.13.UC1 and 6.01.UC1 releases, and they are not fixed in the slightly later 4.13.UD1 and 6.01.UD1 releases either. What is the difference between 4.13.UC1 and 4.13.UD1, or 6.01.UC1 and 6.01.UD1? If you are on an HP machine, then the 4.13.UD1 release avoids using libV3.a; if you are using 6.01 (or 6.00), then that library is necessary because the code in the ESQL/C connectivity layer uses one of the functions from that library. For all other platforms, the only difference between the .UC1 and .UD1 release is that the header files value.h, blob.h and varchar.h are present on all the relevant product tapes; this really only affected customers with just I4GL-RDS (either development or run-time licences). The other changes made only affected source code customers. Yours, Jonathan Leffler (johnl@informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h>
