IDS on Mac
Posted in 2016
A user tried installing IDS 12.10 on a clean macOS Sierra (10.12.2) Mac; the GUI InstallAnywhere wizard silently quit after prompting for the admin password, with nothing installed and no logs in /tmp. Respondents said the GUI installer is badly broken on Mac and suggested the console-mode install instead, checking install logs in /tmp or the home directory, using the right Java SDK, a writable/executable temp dir, and a shell prompt without odd characters. Lester Knutsen succeeded by creating an informix admin user first and running the command-line install as that user (it created the group), though it took days. The original poster didn't report a fix, so no confirmed resolution for the GUI path is recorded.

Hey, I am trying to install IDS on a new Mac - no previous installation of Informix. When i start the UI wizard, it stopped without saying anything after asking me for an an administrative password, which is correct... Is there some install log I could look at? Do I need to create an informix user prior to the install? Do I need to run the install as informix? jg
It's a while since I last had a Mac that hadn't seen Informix, but... Or, at least, one of the macOS Sierra versions, and you'll upgrade to 10.12.2 PDQ because it fixes a pretty big security hole compared with 10.12 and 10.12.1. There should be, but finding it might be tricky; I'm not sure of the name or location. You can look in your /tmp (which is actually a symlink to some private folder rather than a system-wide directory used by everyone). > Do I need to create an informix user prior to the > > install? I don't recall needing to do that it should be able to create the user anyway. There can be no harm in creating the user ahead of time, and adding the group too. What versions? I just installed 12.10.FC8 on a couple of Mac OSX 10.12.2 using console mode. The InstallAnywhere is very broken. You need to right version of the Jave SDK...., make sure you command line prompt does not have characters that might break the install and you have a writeable and executable temp directory.... You should find install logs in /tmp and or the home directory Regards - Lester On 12/30/16 4:12 PM, Jean Georges Perrin wrote: > Hey, > > I am trying to install IDS on a new Mac - no previous installation of > Informix. > > When i start the UI wizard, it stopped without saying anything after asking me > for an an administrative password, which is correct... Hey Paul, I did not want to use the command line :) I wanted to be this perfect GUI guy that points and click :)... Whatever you decide using the GUI, it asks you for root credentials and fails after that. Nothing is installed and nothing in /tmp. The command line process seems to give me more but I did not want to pursue it for now. > On Dec 30, 2016, at 4:21 PM, Paul Watson <paul@oninit.com> wrote: > > What happens if you install from command line ? > > I would expect the logs in to in /tmp > > If you are doing a root install you must be root and the user Informix must > exist. Thanks Lester - do you create the informix user/group before or does the installation take care of it? > On Dec 30, 2016, at 5:44 PM, Lester Knutsen <lester@advancedatatools.com> wrote: > > What versions? Hey Jonathan, Yeah, I believe your Macs come pre-installed with Informix on it... Maybe even a secret version of 4GL too :) Yep - last version of macOS 10.12.2 (16C67), last version of ifx (but I also tried FC6 and FC7). Is the command line tool supposed to create the informix user and group? I would expect the same behavior from the UI tool? I installed ifx on previous macs, but it seemed more straightforward... > On Dec 30, 2016, at 4:34 PM, Jonathan Leffler <jonathan.leffler@gmail.com> wrote: > > It's a while since I last had a Mac that hadn't seen Informix, but... > > On Fri, Dec 30, 2016 at 1:12 PM, Jean Georges Perrin <jgp@jgp.net> wrote: > >> I am trying to install IDS on a new Mac - no previous installation of >> Informix. >> > > New Mac so using macOS Sierra 10.12.2, I assume? > > Or, at least, one of the macOS Sierra versions, and you'll upgrade to > 10.12.2 PDQ because it fixes a pretty big security hole compared with 10.12 > and 10.12.1. > > When >> I >> start the UI wizard, it stopped without saying anything after asking me >> for an an administrative password, which is correct... > > That isn't the way it is supposed to work. One Mac was an upgrade so it had the user and group. The other was a new MacBook Pro, I created the user Informix as admin and the did the command line install as that user and it created the group. InstallAnywhere is very broken and it took a few days to get this to work. Should have some good benchmarks in a few days.
