I.E. Design it on paper (or today with GUI Design Software, with full understanding of DB Design and the Business Requirements). This could include actual naming of all the entity and their relationships. Then the "Physical" DBA takes this information and with DDL creates and manages the DB. I'm not surprised, of your statement. In the "UNIX"/Client Server World the push has been on the Speed of Implementation, losing the "Design" Aspect of DB creation and steps. So you have either those 100 table, non normalized and non relational (in the logical) DB (a BUNCH OF TABLES and DATA) with only one or two people who could really tell you how the DB objects relate. Or someone creates a small DB and could really careless since the only have two - ten tables. One of my Co-Works has a Statement up in his office! "Building a Database? Just because you use good parts doesn't mean it will fly.... know the Data before you design your tables" That's great for those that even take the time to do a DB design. But a many sites need this statement first: "Building a Database? Just because you use good parts doesn't mean it will fly.. .have a Design before you build your Database. Hopes this helps! Cheryl L.
