Memory I/O on Alpha is very much better than on Intel. LINUX has no KAIO
by default yet, so informix threads cannot write into and read from a
chunk simultaneously. KAIO feature is the most important feature, if you
have a certain number of clients accessing in parallel.
True64 UNIX is clustering, also gives nonstop features, like NOVELL SMP
with IPX.
SMP on LINUX causes much trouble. If you have 21264 or greater, stay.
All 21264, 21364 are much faster with databases, because of their high
RAM I/O. Sure, modern Intel SMP Boards have fast I/O, but in reality
benchmarks are not comparable. ALPHA DUAL Boards (even if equipped with
only one processor) have 256 Bit Memory access in parallel, no 2nd/3rd
level cache needed. They run like hell. (Do not use 1-CPU Boards, they
are much slower)
