Re: Why should I archive now?

You said you used it in the same dbspace and it worked. Maybe if you had wanted to use it somewhere else, like in another database instance, it might not have worked. I don't know - just guessing... Author: Jacob Salomon <jake@apparel.net> at INTERNET Date: 9/18/97 2:42 PM Hi Family, this is from the department of possible brain damage. I am building a new ODS envrionment 7.13.UC1. I realized that when I created dbspace number 5 (named garpac) I had neglected to use the full length of the raw device. Rather than add a chunk to the dbspace to fill out the device, I decided to drop the dbspace and recreate it at its full length. In onmonitor, I went into DBSpace/Drop and dropped "garpac", as I've many times in the past. I got this pair of messages: DBspace/BLOBspace successfully dropped. ** WARNING ** A level 0 archive will need to be done before any chunks from DBspace garpac can be reused (see OnLine Administrator's manual). Huh? What kind of requirement is that? If I were to perform an archive now, would it save the pages from the dbspace that no longer exists? It would be closer to making sense if it required the level-0 archive *before* I drop a dbspace. And even that would be dumb; after all, we can drop only an empty dbspace and there would be no point in archiving that! I tried to recreate the same-named dbspace over the disk space of the dropped area. It not only worked, it was restored as dbspace # 5. So the whole message seems to have been a red herring (which I dislike even more than schmalz herring! ;-). Obviously I have no problem here; I'm just asking if anyone can make sense out of the bogus requirement.
