Upgrade to 10 Failed
Posted in 2006
A DBA upgrading IDS 9.4.UC7 to 10.0.UC4 on Red Hat (new install directory, copied ONCONFIG settings, moved the $INFORMIXDIR symlink) found the instance aborting during conversion with "The chunk '/ifxdbsys/dbspace/links/rootdbs' must have READ/WRITE permissions for owner and group (660)". Chunks were 2GB cooked files reached via symlinks. Suggestions were to check oninit's permissions/setuid, to run the first conversion boot as user informix, and to verify the symlink targets were 660 informix:informix — all of which the poster confirmed were already correct. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

I am attempting to upgrade IDS 9.4.UC7 to IDS 10.0.UC4 on RedHat Linux. Here are the steps I performed: Backed up 9.4 database Shutdown Instance Installed IDS 10 into a seperate directory Updated the IDS 10 onconfig file with the correct paramaters from my 9.4 instance. Moved the link so informix now looked at IDS directories Started Instance. It fails with the following error (from online.log): Mon Jan 23 21:12:17 2006 21:12:17 Warning: ONCONFIG dump directory (DUMPDIR) '/ifxbak/dumps' has insecure permissions 21:12:17 Event alarms enabled. I think your binaries probably don't have the correct permissions. oninit
specifically.

did i mention i like nulls? heck, i even go so far as to say that all
columns in a table except the primary key could/should be nullable. this
has certain advantages, for example, if you need to insert a child record
and you don't have a parent row for it, just do an insert into the parent
table with the primary key value (everything else null), and voila,
relational integrity is preserved. but this is, admittedly, a bit
controversial among modellers.

Remember that for the initial conversion, you must start oninit as user
informix.

oninit permissions are as follows:
-rwsr-sr-- 1 root informix 13193542 Jan 23 06:33 oninit
The install was run as root, but oninit was being run as informix.
