Donny asked whether an IDS roadmap existed and what would happen to the 9.x line now that IDS 10.00 had been mentioned. Madison Pruet explained that what was to be 9.50 was simply rebranded as 10.00, because the functional gap from 9.0 was considered larger than typical point releases. The follow-up question was whether the jump in version number would mean a chargeable upgrade from 9.40 (as 7.31 to 9.40 was). Claus Samuelsen answered that 9.x customers with a maintenance agreement (Passport Advantage) could move to 10.x at no charge.

Anyone know if there is an IDS roadmap available?
I heard something about IDS 10.00 and I'm wondering what's happening
with the 9.x stream.

Donny

9.50 was rebranded as 10.00 because it was felt that the functional
differences between 9.0 and 9.5 was much greater than the differences
between say - 7.24 and 7.30, or 7.0 and 7.20

Will the big version number change mean there will be an upgrade charge
from 9.40, like there is from 7.31 to 9.40, or will a maintenance
agreement entitle you to a free update?
Ben.

I'm not totally sure, but I was under the impression that there was some
form of grace period in which it was considered a maintenance upgrade.
Maybe we can get some more official response from folks in marketing.

This is ABSOLUTELY the key question I think. I certainly don't agree with
Sebastian that the move is necessarily bad from a patching point of view:
the releases are not being brought out with any greater frequency, and it's
just a name change. I'm sure that someone did some market research and
concluded that renaming 9.5 as 10 conveys better the substabtial increases
in fuinctionality that has occurred within the 9 range. I support that.
But might some other department now have seen the opportunity to cash in?
The signs are worrying: asking your question seems at present to elicit a
shuffling of feet and some "Don't think so but ..." mumbling.
In my experience as a reseller, v7 -> v9 upgrades (which are chargeable)
continue to attract a large amount of resistance from customers.
It would be nice if someone responsible for the Informix brand could confirm
that 9.x -> 10 will be a free upgrade for those in maintenance.

IDS 9.x customers with maintenance agreement (Passport Advantage) may
upgrade to IDS 10.x without any charges.
