AIX 5.2, Informix 7.31, compatibility issues, GCC, ESQL questions ...
Posted in 2005
Poster asked whether Informix 7.31 would run on new Power5/AIX 5.2-5.3 hardware, where to find AIX/Informix and AIX/RISC compatibility matrices, and whether ESQL/C code could be built with gcc instead of IBM's compiler. Replies pointed to IBM's downloadable platform availability spreadsheet, reported 7.31 UC5 running fine on AIX 5.2 (and 7.31 on a p520/AIX 5.3) with ESQL/C, noted any CHRP machine (43P-150, 7025-F50 and newer) takes 5.2, and said straight C links fine with gcc but gcc isn't officially supported by Informix (watch for gdb attach problems and a loc_t clash with AIX localedef.h). The poster opted for IBM's C compiler.

Hi, I have some questions I would like to ask, maybe some of you has experience on these subjects. I have been out of IBM business for a while so sorry if the questions are somehow stupid. I have a customer that wants to buy new power5 machines but keep the old Informix 7.31 licences. Where can I find some matrix about: - AIX and Informix compatibility? - AIX and RISC compatibility matrix (is AIX 5.2 or 5.3 suported on XX machine) Has anybody tried this combination of software (will it install at all in AIX5.2 32bit kernel mode) ? What about some experience compiling esql code with gcc compiler? I have some binaries working right now, code compiled with IBM's C compiler and I would like to try if I can go with GCC. Thank you all damboni
have you looked on the IBM Informix website. IBM provides a platform availability spreadsheet that you can download. Every Informix version that is GA (and some older ones) are listed! Nothing on it about upcoming products but it will list your 7.31 licenses. Heres the link to the page you download the spreadhseet from : //wwwibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/roadmaps.html damboni wrote: > Hi, > > I have some questions I would like to ask, maybe some of you has > experience on these subjects. > I have been out of IBM business for a while so sorry if the questions > are somehow stupid. > I have a customer that wants to buy new power5 machines but keep the > old Informix 7.31 licences. There should be no problems compiling "straight-C" code with gcc -- it is link-compatible with all the other AIX object code. Now if C++ is also involved, that's another story. We have actually some customers running 7.31 UC5 against AIX 5.2. The Application uses ESQL/C interface. Never invented any Pb. A lot of Problems arouse with gcc (but that's not an issue of AIX & IDS) We never found a Version of gcc for which gdb could attach a process properly. Alwas got I/O error in ptrace... with varios gdb (e.g. 6.1, 6.2) versions. Compiling was not such a Problem. If you are using locators you will have to find a way around the loc_t structure conflicting with AIX localedef.h "damboni" <aleksandar.ivanovski@gmail.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:1107280132.792832.60920@c13g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... > Hi, > > I have some questions I would like to ask, maybe some of you has > experience on these subjects. > I have been out of IBM business for a while so sorry if the questions > are somehow stupid. > I have a customer that wants to buy new power5 machines but keep the > old Informix 7.31 licences. Thanks for the fast response, the last post makes me happy :-) about 7.31 and AIX 5.2. About the esql code, I think I'll go with IBM's C compiler, yes it is straight C code + informix libraries so it should not make problems. I need extra info about the AIX and RISC compatibility matrix i.e. if machine XX will accept aix 5.2 installation thakn you all damboni
I'm running IDS 7.31UCsomething on a p520 (ie Power processors) running AIX 5.3L, admittedly only as a staging post for an upgrade to 9.40 We didn;t have the media for this IDS version but just extracted it froma tar archive of an installation on AIX 4.3. Although this is not supported, it often works. Provided the customer has current maintenance they will be able to upgrade to the requisite IDS version. My customer just bought C for AIX for this box: costs about '600. I'd be interetsed to hear the answer about gcc. FYI, I am using gcc with AIX 5.1, with Informix, and in phone conversations with Informix support, they told me they don't officially support gcc on AIX, only the AIX C compiler (XL C). I'm in the middle of rewriting some C functions we had compiled into our 4L fglgo runner with XL C and ESQL on AIX 4.3.3, but now using C-SDK and gcc on AIX 5.1 -- Colin Timothy J.
