Re: More memory, or more processors

My vote for best answer goes to: Dave Kosenko (nospam_dkosenko@monmouth.com) for (specifically this part of) his answer: : If you are currently at the limit on both, then adding more of one or the : other will merely leave you starved for whatever you didn't add. If performance : metrics show that you are starved on only one of the two, then by all means go : for that one. But be prepared to be starved for the other after the upgrade! Hate to say it, but there is not enough information in the original question for us to really intelligently answer the question. Conventional wisdom is that database applications are I/O-bound and therefore disk and/or memory are most helpful, but I've seen DSA installations that were CPU-bound (okay, sometimes that is due to poor application coding.) Some of the information that would help us answer your question more specifically for your situation are: - what's your current read cache rate? - what do your ready queues look like? - how many CPUVP's do you have, and what is their utilization like? - how many concurrent users do you have? - what else runs on the machine besides the OnLine engine? 4GL applications? other applications? - what is the CPU utilization on the system now? - what is the memory utilization on the system now? - are you using kaio? I'm sure I'll think of a whole bunch more as soon as I send this... But in any case I'm not sure this can be answered well via news/email. But maybe I'm biased, seeing as how I do this kind of stuff for a living :) June ---- June Tong Informix Software ---- ---- Senior Consultant (650) 926-6140 ---- ---- International Support junet@informix.com ---- ---- Location-du-jour: Ashford, England ---- * * Standard disclaimers apply * - Please do not send me requests/questions by mail.
