Correction.

should read
It also supports to_date() to convert from char to date, just in case you need
to compare in the other direction.

Yes it does. I am using 7.30.UC8 and it works here, and I believe it has been
available from 7.30. Example:
select birthdt, substr(to_char(birthdt, 4, 2) birthmonth
from mytable;
It also supports to_char() to convert from date to char, just in case you need
to compare in the other direction.

Subject: TO_CHAR? or not to char
Hi
Informix = 730UC5.
Does anyone know if informix has a TO_CHAR function that a certain other
database does that starts with the letter 'O' and ends in 'racle'. It
changes date/time or other fields to character so you can compare them.
For our off the shelf application (PeopleSoft) we need to implement this
to check a start date against a date entered on a report which just
happens to be character field - they have given us an oracle answer and
say they don't know if informix supports it.
thanks Bridget
