Remove onbar expired images
Posted in 2009
Dave, on IDS 10.00.FC6X7 under Solaris using ON-Bar with Symantec NetBackup, wanted to purge backup entries from the ixbar emergency boot file and the sysutils ON-Bar tables once NetBackup expired the images after five weeks, but onsmsync appeared to do nothing. A respondent posted the onsmsync syntax (-b, -f, -g, -i, -t, -s, -O) and links to the IBM docs, noting -i expires backups older than a given interval. Dave replied none of the commands worked and that IBM support was still investigating; he was asked for details (Solaris/NetBackup versions, sm_versions, bar_act.log, local vs remote storage manager). No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello,
We are running Informix IDS 10.00.FC6X7 on Solaris and we recently
upgraded from ontape to onbar and are using the NetBackup storage
manager. Generally we keep our backups on a five week retention
schedule and after that time NetBackup expires those images. After
those backup images expire I would like to remove them from both the
ixbar file and onbar tables in the sysutils database. Running
onsmsync doesn't seem to do anything (I opened a ticket with Informix
support).
What do you do or recommend for cleaning up both the ixbar file and
onbar tables ?? Do you have any best practices or recommendations?

onsmsync ---
onsmsync usage
[-g <gen> | -t <time> | -i <interval>] [-s] [-O] [-f <filename> | <spaces>]
-b
-b synchronizes the sysutils database and ON-Bar emergency boot file
-f pathname of file containing list of storage spaces
-g number of generations/versions of level 0 backup to retain
-i time interval (age) before which objects should be expired
-t datetime before which objects should be expired
-s skip syncing objects that are already expired from storage manager.
-O override internal error checks - enforce policy strictly
<spaces> list of storage spaces to check for expiration
Date time formats are as in the ixbar file.

-i interval Expires all backups older than some period of time Retains backups younger than this interval. Backups older than
interval are not expired if they are needed to restore from other backups after that interval. Use the ANSI or GLS format for the
interval: YYYY-MM or DD HH:MM:SS

Hello theBP,
Yes I got your other email/post and I have read up on the documentation.
However, none of those onsmsync commands work. Informix support is still
looking into.
Which Storage Manager have you seen the onsmsync work with? We are using
Symantec's NetBackup as our storage manager.

(Mainly XBSA compliant ones ;) If you could expand a bit on "none of the onsmsync commands work" that may help. Like : 1. Version of Solaris 2. Version of Netbackup 3. $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sm_versions 4. bar_act.log 6. Is the storage manager local or on another machine? 7. If of another machine, does the local SM client report anything? 8. Do backups work? etc. etc. etc.
